About Me

I'm passionate about capturing the natural world through photography. I use a variety of digital and film formats, including mirrorless full-frame cameras, medium format digital, and large format 8x10 film. This site is new, and the images currently uploaded represent a tiny fraction of my 30+ years of photography. I'll continue uploading more.

Benefits of Large Format 8x10 Film Photography

Aside from large format, I also shoot medium format with a GFX 100 and full-frame with Nikon Z cameras.

As a photographer deeply invested in both digital and large format film photography, I am constantly searching for the best tools to achieve a distinct look while maintaining an efficient workflow. While my love for 8x10 large format film remains strong, I often need a more practical solution for certain projects. That’s why I shoot with the Fujifilm GFX 100—it provides the closest aesthetic to large format while allowing me to work without the constraints of a fully analog process.

One of the most compelling reasons I chose the GFX 100 is its massive 102-megapixel medium format sensor. While it doesn’t match the sheer negative size of an 8x10 film sheet, it captures an incredible amount of detail, tonality, and depth, producing images that feel remarkably similar to large format photography. The sensor’s high resolution allows for substantial cropping and print enlargement while still retaining exceptional sharpness, making it ideal for my landscape and portrait work.

Beyond resolution, the GFX 100 excels in dynamic range and color rendition. Large format film is renowned for its ability to render subtle gradations in highlights and shadows, and the GFX 100 comes remarkably close to replicating that quality. Fujifilm’s color science is well known for its natural and pleasing tones, giving me results that often require minimal post-processing to achieve the look I want.

Another aspect where the GFX 100 shines is depth of field control. While a medium format sensor doesn’t provide the exact depth characteristics of an 8x10 negative, pairing the camera with fast, high-quality GF lenses allows for a subject separation that closely mimics the look of large format. Lenses like the GF 110mm f/2 offer a beautifully smooth transition from sharp focus to out-of-focus areas, creating a sense of depth that feels organic and cinematic.

One of the biggest advantages of the GFX 100 over a traditional large format setup is its efficiency. Shooting with 8x10 film requires significant preparation, from loading film holders to setting up a bulky tripod and performing precise manual focusing. In contrast, the GFX 100 gives me the ability to compose, focus, and shoot in seconds while still maintaining a thoughtful, deliberate approach to image-making. This is crucial for situations where time is limited, such as dynamic lighting conditions or live portrait sessions.

Additionally, the built-in image stabilization in the GFX 100 provides a level of flexibility that large format film simply cannot offer. Handheld shooting, even with such a high-resolution sensor, is a reality, allowing me to work in a variety of conditions without always relying on a tripod. This freedom enables me to capture fleeting moments without sacrificing the precision and detail that I expect from a large format aesthetic.

While the GFX 100 cannot fully replace the experience of shooting large format film, it offers the best balance between quality and practicality. It allows me to achieve a look reminiscent of 8x10 while maintaining a fluid and efficient workflow. For photographers who love the depth, detail, and tonality of large format but need the speed and flexibility of digital, the GFX 100 is an exceptional tool.

In the end, it’s not just about the gear—it’s about how well a camera supports your creative vision. For me, the GFX 100 serves as the perfect bridge between the timeless beauty of large format and the demands of modern photography. It enables me to focus on what truly matters: capturing the world with depth, nuance, and artistic intent.
